2011 Field Day Overview

Once again we find Field Day lurking around the corner but taking its time to get here.

Like the past two years, this year we’re planning a large format Field Day event.  At a minimum we’re going to operate at least ten stations using a maximum of 150 watts powered by generators.

The things we’ve learned from the past two years is that

(1) you liked the large format

(2) you had lots of fun and

(3) you want to do it again.

Although we learned a lot from the last two years, it will still be challenging and we’re going to need lots of help, just like last year, if we’re to be successful.

Field Day Coordinators and Planning Committee:

•       Our Field Day Coordinating Committee for Field Day 2011 includes the “usual suspects” from the past two years. We haven’t decided which person to blame.

•       They are putting together a planning committee and will announce the membership of that committee in the very near future.

•       We’re plan to add some “twists” to this year’s Field Day to add a little more excitement and increase our “fun factor”.

Goals:  Our goals are to have a safe and fun Field Day while making lots of contacts, making new friends, renewing old friendships, helping the new hams, and enjoying good food.

Safety:  Safety is our primary goal.  Set-up and take-down crews are strongly urged to apply lots of sunscreen and wear wide brimmed hats, drink lots of fluids, take breaks and go into the clubhouse to cool down.  We also urge all participants to drink plenty of fluids while participating. We are going to take mandatory breaks during the Set-up phase and go into the clubhouse to cool down.

Training:  We are scheduling training sessions for all participants as well as training for the set-up crew.

Stations:  We’re going to operate at least TEN stations using emergency power (generators) as:  W3VPR 10A  MDC.  There will be lots of opportunity for everyone to get on the air and make lots of contacts.

•       Six phone stations on the following bands: 160, 80, 40, 20m, 15, 10, and 6 meters.

•       One digital station on at least one band

•       Three Morse stations on the following bands:  20m, 40m, and 80/10/15m

Activities

We’ve identified 9 activity periods from set-up on Friday, June 24th through take-down on Sunday, June 26th.  Each period is about 4 hours in duration and includes multiple activities.

Please look over the activity periods and activities below and pick two or three and prioritize them and let us know what your preferences are via e-mail:  fieldday@w3vpr.org

If you spend four hours operating a station can you also spend an hour here and there to document the Field Day activities or help with meal preparation?
